What is a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is a sudden change in your oral health that requires fast action to eliminate symptoms.
Tooth pain is a major symptom of dental emergencies. Unfortunately, painkillers don’t do much for tooth pain so you should see a dentist quickly instead of waiting for it to get better on its own.
Dental emergencies always seem to happen at the wrong times, especially Saturdays, holidays, and vacations! So don’t wait until you’re in agony to come see our on-call dentist.
We offer appointments the same day or within 24 hours from 7 am to 9 pm, Monday through Friday and 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday. Clinique Hygiène Dentaire offers emergency dental care in Geneva, Lausanne, Meyrin, and Yverdon.
Accidents are another type of dental emergency. Falling off your scooter or taking a hit to the face can break one or more teeth.
Even if your teeth aren’t visibly broken, we strongly recommend making an emergency appointment with a dentist and reporting the accident to your insurance.
Remember that your basic insurance plan will cover any accident-related treatment costs if you and your dentist report the accident correctly.
What kinds of problems count as dental emergencies?
Dental emergencies that require immediate attention from an on-call dentist include:
Tooth abscesses
A tooth abscess is an infection characterized by pus build-up in the tissue around your teeth. The area around the affected tooth may be red or hot and you may feel tired or even develop a fever.
In most cases, we need to drain the abscess from the outside of your gum or by drilling a small cavity in the top of your tooth.
Bleeding gums
Just like bleeding anywhere else on your body, bleeding gums mean something is wrong.
They are usually caused by inflammation from tartar build-up under your gums, so a thorough cleaning and improved home care should cure them.
In some cases, however, bleeding may be caused by more serious issues like infections, deep cavities, or wisdom teeth that are unable to erupt. That’s why it’s important to make an emergency appointment with one of our dentists as soon as you notice bleeding.
Broken teeth
Broken teeth require fast, robust restoration to prevent further damage, keep food from getting trapped in the cavity, and ensure that the sharp edges don’t injure your tongue or mouth.
Locked jaws
In some cases, a locked jaw is caused by moving the wrong way and your dentist can reposition your jaw with a simple manipulation.
In other cases, it is due to a limited ability to open your mouth. This is usually caused by a wisdom tooth infection leading to temporary muscle paralysis.
Accidents
Whether you broke or simply bruised one or more teeth, an emergency appointment is essential so we can examine your teeth and repair any damage. We’ll also take care of the paperwork to report your accident so your LAMAL insurance will cover all of your visits and treatment due to the accident.
Lost fillings
Lost fillings are extremely common. They require an effective, long-lasting, and attractive restoration after we carefully clean the tooth. We never use gray fillings at CHD!
Broken orthodontic appliances
Broken orthodontic appliances that cause injuries due to irritation are a classic dental emergency. Our orthodontists and dentists will see you the same day for a quick fix. Whether that means cementing a bracket, cutting a wire, or removing an irritant, our dentists are here for you!
Pain
Pain is the number one symptom that brings emergency patients in to see us. It’s your body’s way of telling you something is wrong.
Relief is close! The goal of an emergency appointment is to relieve your pain fast, within 24 hours.
Lost crowns or inlay cores
If your crown, inlay core, or bridge comes out, we will need to cement it back in place after cleaning the prosthetic and your tooth. In some cases, your crown or inlay core may no longer be usable. When that happens, we fit you with a temporary crown. Sometimes, your remaining natural tooth may also need to be removed. No matter what, we always discuss your treatment needs with you first!
Facial swelling
Facial swelling is often caused by a tooth abscess. It’s important to consult one of our dentists before the swelling causes respiratory distress or spreads to more sensitive parts of your head and neck.
Detached permanent retainers
The wire cemented behind your front teeth at the end of an orthodontic treatment can become detached or break. Make an emergency appointment to have it repaired asap and keep your teeth from moving back to their original position and undoing your perfect smile.

Is this actually a dental emergency? Do I really have to see a dentist?
- Are you feeling an ache or shooting pains in a tooth?
- Are your teeth sensitive to heat, cold, or sugar?
- Is tooth pain waking you up at night?
- Have a broken, loose, or lost tooth after an accident?
- A scratch or abscess that just won’t go away?
It’s normal to wonder whether you really need to see a dentist.
But if you answered “yes” to any of those questions, we strongly recommend making an appointment at CHD Clinique Hygiène Dentaire as soon as possible.
What happens during an emergency appointment at CHD Clinique Hygiène Dentaire ?
When you come in for an emergency appointment, our goal is to relieve your pain fast and prevent any complications. Our dentist will provide appropriate emergency treatment for your condition. In some cases, if you are experiencing acute pain you may need to come back for a second, more permanent procedure… But since the dentist will relieve your pain at the first appointment, the second appointment will be much more pleasant!
How much does an emergency appointment cost?
Emergency appointment and treatment costs vary depending on the type of care required, but average around 120 CHF. Your dentist will always give you an exact price after diagnosing your condition and before starting treatment.
How can I manage my tooth pain until my appointment?
You can:
- take a pain reliever like Ponstan or an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or mefenamic acid.
- apply an ice pack to your cheek: cold can help relieve pain
- stay seated or keep your head elevated. Lying down increases the pressure on your tissues, which indirectly increases pain.
- if you are bleeding: carefully rinse your mouth and bite on a clean compress to decrease bleeding.
