Find out more about gum grafts
How long does a gum graft take?
A gum graft procedure involves three steps: preparation of the grafting site, harvesting of the graft from the patient’s mouth (usually from the palate or behind the last molar), and suturing the graft in place. The procedure typically lasts between 1 and 3 hours.
It then takes approximately 2 to 4 weeks for the grafted area to heal.
Is a gum graft painful?
A gum graft is usually performed under local anesthesia and is not painful during the procedure.
However, some sensitivity may occur after the operation, particularly at the graft harvesting site. This is a normal response to inflammation. Applying ice to the graft area is recommended to reduce swelling. Your dentist may also prescribe anti-inflammatory or pain-relief medications to help manage discomfort.
What happens after a gum graft?
Following a gum graft, swelling may occur in the treated area, and in rare cases, slight bleeding may appear.
To promote healing, avoid eating on the side where the graft was placed and at the graft harvesting site. Refrain from smoking, drinking alcohol, and opt for soft, lukewarm foods for 2 to 4 weeks.
As for the results, they usually become visible within the first few days and continue to improve over the next 6 to 12 months after the procedure.
How can gum issues be prevented to avoid the need for a graft?
Gum recession can be caused by various factors: overly aggressive brushing, poor tooth positioning leading to excessive pressure on certain teeth, chronic gum inflammation or infections, bruxism (grinding or clenching teeth), or periodontitis (gum disease).
To avoid needing a gum graft:
Maintain impeccable oral hygiene.
Visit your dentist at least once a year to monitor your gum health (and overall oral health) and prevent future problems such as gum recession or tooth loss.
