Teeth cleaning and polishing for orthodontic patients
Braces or aligners, the same battle: hunting for food between teeth.
Whether undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign aligners, food and tartar retention is greater than with natural teeth. It is therefore advisable to carry out teeth cleaning and polishing quickly but more frequently than usual in order to reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis) or even white spots on the teeth at the end of your treatment.
Teeth cleaning and polishing for orthodontic patients at CHD
The hygienist will systematically carry out a complete check of your mouth and your appliances (aligners or braces) to ensure that everything is in order before starting your dental cleaning.

Teeth cleaning and polishing for a patient undergoing orthodontic treatment involves several sessions, each with a different function:
- a cleaning session before fitting braces or aligners
- a second instructional session, just after the braces or aligners have been fitted, where the hygienist explains to the patient how to brush with these appliances and which accessories to use
- one session every 3 or 4 months, depending on the patient’s dental hygiene habits
- a session when the orthodontist removes the braces in order to clean the teeth properly and remove adhesive residues
If necessary, the hygienist will apply fluoride to the teeth throughout the treatment.

Find out more about scaling for orthodontic patients
Why are dental cleaning and polishing important for orthodontic patients?
Wearing orthodontic appliances, whether braces or an Invisalign aligner, promotes the retention of food debris and the buildup of tartar. Orthodontic treatment therefore means you need more frequent dental cleaning and polishing sessions than when you are not wearing any dental appliances.
What are the steps of dental cleaning and polishing for orthodontic patients?
The dental cleaning and polishing process for a patient undergoing orthodontic treatment is carried out in several steps: an initial cleaning session before placing the braces or aligner, which also allows for a radiographic check; a second session immediately after the appliance is fitted, during which the patient is given all the instructions for maintaining good daily oral hygiene; a session every 3 to 4 months (depending on the patient’s diligence); and a final session to remove the appliance, eliminate any residual adhesive, and thoroughly clean the teeth.
What techniques are used for scaling and polishing in orthodontic patients?
At CHD, we use state-of-the-art equipment.
For scaling: our hygienists use an EMS ultrasonic system combined with “NO-PAIN” technology and Deppeler manual curettes, ensuring a completely painless scaling experience.
Polishing is performed using the AIRFLOW air polisher, which is particularly suited for orthodontic appliances as it allows access to hard-to-reach areas.
Are scaling and polishing painful for patients with orthodontic appliances?
Absolutely not. At CHD, our hygienists specialize in cleaning and polishing and are known for their gentle approach. They are also equipped with state-of-the-art systems, allowing them to perform scaling and polishing without any pain.
However, if you are experiencing inflammation that makes your teeth or gums sensitive, let your hygienist know before the session so they can adapt to your situation.
