Orthodontics for Children and Adolescents
Straight, well-aligned teeth that are easy to clean: it’s up to us!
It is recommended that children see an orthodontist for the first time around the age of 6. Seeing an orthodontist at this age is a good time to check the number and position of teeth and to identify any jaw problems that may need early treatment.
Orthodontics for Children and Adolescents CHD
Before starting orthodontic treatment, we first check that your teenager has no cavities and brushes his or her teeth properly. Our hygienists will help them to optimise their oral hygiene. Poor hygiene without braces can lead to increased inflammation with the braces, slowing down the alignment of the teeth.

Good to know
Orthodontic treatment is a financial and personal investment, which is why we leave nothing to chance to achieve the ideal result.
EVERYTHING you’ve always wanted to know about orthodontics in one video:
Most of the time, we prefer to start orthodontic treatment when children have all their adult teeth. This allows us to be more effective and to carry out shorter courses of treatment. There’s no point in having one set of braces after another from an early age.

There are two reasons for children to have orthodontic treatment: firstly, for aesthetic reasons, to enhance the child’s smile, but also for oral health reasons: this “functional” part of orthodontics is often forgotten! Children often have problems with their teeth: misalignment, too much space between teeth, or not enough room for all the teeth to develop properly in the child’s mouth. By correcting these problems at an early age, the patient is guaranteed to limit the risk of them worsening in adulthood.
It is advisable to make an appointment with an orthodontist at an early age: from 6 years onwards. Seeing an orthodontist at this age can help identify jaw problems that may require early orthodontic treatment. Between the ages of 6 and 10, the orthodontist may recommend an initial phase of treatment to help the teeth develop properly. But generally speaking, it’s between the ages of 11 and 16 that it’s easier to treat the majority of cases, ranging from the correction of tooth alignment to a more complex malocclusion.
There are 4 main types of orthodontic treatment for children and teenagers:
– Removable appliances such as retainers, thrusters or palate expanders. These appliances do not align the teeth, but can be used to correct jaw problems from an early age (narrow palate, upper jaw too far forward or back in relation to the lower jaw, etc.) to avoid lengthy orthodontic treatment in adolescence.
– “Classic” braces: this is a multi-attachment concept that involves placing brackets on the outside of each tooth and connecting them together with a wire. They can be made of metal or ceramic for a more discreet visual effect;
– The lingual technique: this is also a multi-attachment appliance, but it involves placing the attachments on the inside of the teeth so that they cannot be seen;
– Invisalign aligners: the most popular for adults. These are removable, transparent aligners that allow you to correct the alignment of your teeth as you go along, using an appliance that is virtually invisible and can be removed (at mealtimes, for example).
Your orthodontist will recommend a treatment suited to your child’s age. Generally speaking, orthodontic treatment should be started when your child has all his or her adult teeth, i.e. between the ages of 11 and 16.
However, sometimes, after the first consultation at the age of 6, the orthodontist detects a problem in the development or position of your child’s teeth. In such cases, it is sometimes preferable to start treatment early, as it is no longer a question of dental alignment but of functional development.
The treatment recommended for children and teenagers will be the one that best meets the patient’s needs (and the complexity of the treatment to be carried out) but also the one that meets the parents’ budgetary constraints.
Invisalign aligners offer a large number of advantages and are increasingly popular with teenagers because they are discreet, comfortable and removable. Children can remove them during meals and when brushing their teeth.
The main disadvantages of Invisalign treatment are the price, which is often more expensive than a more traditional treatment (based on braces, for example), and the child’s or teenager’s compliance. They must wear their aligners rigorously for the treatment to work.
Invisalign First is an orthodontic treatment using Invisalign clear aligners, but it is suitable for children because it aims to correct malocclusions that appear in baby teeth, for a dentition that is still growing.
The price of an Invisalign First treatment varies according to the complexity of the alignment problem to be treated and the duration of the treatment. Ask your orthodontist for a precise quote.
The cost of orthodontic treatment for children varies according to the complexity and duration of the treatment. On average, you should expect to pay between CHF 2,500 and CHF 3,500 for complex orthodontic treatment for a child aged between 6 and 10, and between CHF 6,000 and CHF 8,500 for a teenager aged between 11 and 16.
The effectiveness of orthodontic treatment rarely depends on the appliance chosen. In fact, whether you opt for braces or Invisalign aligners, you’ll get the same result. What makes the difference between one solution and another is above all the patient’s needs and possibilities: whether they want invisible treatment or not, and what their budget is.
On the other hand, the patient’s diligence and seriousness are decisive factors in the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment, and should be taken into account when making your choice. If the child or teenager is not rigorous about wearing braces, it is best to opt for fixed braces.
– The first session involves gathering information such as photos, X-rays and impressions. This process enables us to study the position of the teeth and create a treatment plan that takes into account the aesthetics of the whole face.
– Once the appliance or braces are in place, we see each other on average once a month. It should be noted that your child is seen each time by the orthodontist and not by an assistant.
– When the orthodontic treatment is nearing completion, a wire placed behind the teeth or a “retainer” is fitted in order to maintain good alignment and harmony in the closure between the upper and lower teeth.
This is, of course, part of the initial estimate.
The price indicated on the estimate is a fixed price, which includes the entire service and will never be exceeded. From the outset, you’ll know exactly how much the treatment will cost , so there are no nasty surprises! We want Orthodontics to evolve, which is why the quote no longer depends on the length of the treatment. If the treatment takes slightly longer than expected, the estimate will not be any higher: it’s up to us to be efficient!
